Masters Degree in Art Education

 

The Master of Education is a professional degree that focuses on the enhancement of a candidate’s ability to function as an art teacher, although some students complete the program to work in museums or other community arts organizations. The College of Education Program Guide for Master’s Degree Students contains all official information relating to the graduate program.

I.  Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet admission requirements for the College of Education graduate studies program. These appear in the University Graduate and Professional Studies catalogue.

II.  Course Requirements
 
A.  College of Education Requirements (9 hours):
 
     (3 hours) Historical, Cultural, and Philosophical Foundations (choose one of the following):

     ELCS 7365, CUIN 6360, CUST 6311, CUST 6360, CUST 6370, HLT 6323, PEP 6321
 

     (3 hours) Human Growth and Learning (choose one of the following):
     EPSY 6330, EPSY 6340, PEP 6340
 
     ( 3 hours) Inquiry
     CUIN 6378, EPSY 6300, EPSY 6310, PEP 6305
   
B.  Art Education Courses (18 hours):
 
  ARED 6345 Art in the Elementary and Secondary Schools
  ARED 6350 Art Education Technology
  ARED 6365 Integrative Art Teaching
  ARED 7305 History of Art Education
  ARED 7315 Philosophy of Art and Art Education
  ARED 7350 Curriculum Development in Art Education
  ARED 7352 Issues and Trends in Art Education
  ARED 7340 Theory and Practice of Art Museum Education
                                   and other 6000 and 7000 Art Ed Courses
C.  Elective Courses (9 hours)
     Three courses relevant to research interests and career goals selected with adviser.
   
 PS: Each degree plan must include a minimum of 6 semester hours of coursework completed outside the major department.

D.  Curriculum and Instruction Requirements
    
     Comprehensive Examination (3 hours)
OR
     Thesis option (6 hours)
: Two courses devoted to the development and completion of a thesis. Adviser approval and supervision is required.
